Samsung NC10

The Samsung NC10 has joined the ranks of 10-inch netbooks—including the Eee PC 1000H, MSI Wind, and Lenovo IdeaPad S10—and it beats them all. The $499 NC10 may have the same cookie-cutter specs as its competitors, including a 1.6-GHz Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, and Windows XP, but its spacious, well-positioned keyboard and more than 7 hours of battery life make this system our favorite 10-inch netbook yet. Design The Samsung NC10 isn’t the flashiest netbook to grace our labs. The white matte lid (also available in Navy Blue in the U.S.), whose only adornment is its mirrored Samsung logo, is smooth, and its rounded square edges give the system a more professional look than the MSI Wind or the Eee PC 1000H manages. The silver trim and glowing blue and reddish orange status lights on the front edge project a futuristic aura. Dell Latitude 2100

This 10-inch netbook for the education market is durable and performs well, but it’s a bit hefty. While Dell’s newest netbook, the Latitude 2100, has the same Intel Atom processor, RAM, and operating system as its Inspiron Mini line, the Latitude is made of tougher stuff. That’s because it was created for students, especially those from kindergarten through eighth grade; although it does have some crossover appeal for road warriors. Packed with education-friendly features and sporting a durable design, it’s larger and heavier than most netbooks on the market. At $499 for our configuration, it’s not the least expensive netbook on the market, but its excellent ergonomics and peppy performance send it to the head of the class. ASUS N10J-A2

This premium netbook, aimed at business users, offers switchable graphics, a huge hard drive, and a speedy instant-on OS. As netbook manufacturers flirt with larger screen sizes, and generally raise the bar for performance, the definition of a netbook is constantly evolving. The ASUS N10J-A2 is the latest to break—or at least stretch—the mold. This $799 system offers a business-friendly design and port selection, along with switchable graphics, face detection, and several upgrades to the identically designed N10Jc ($649), including a bigger 320GB hard drive (up from 160GB), 2GB of RAM (formerly 1GB), and Windows Vista Business. Its relative heft and less-than-stellar battery life are strikes against, but if you can live with a 10-inch display, the N10J-A2’s overall performance and design make it a good alternative to traditional ultraportables that cost considerably more.
