AMD’s Yukon Opens New Category between Netbooks & Ultra-portable Laptops

At last AMD entered to the market of netbook but in its own way not following the way of Intel or VIA. AMD is opening a new category of laptops in the overwhelming market of laptops: A new category of budget ultra portable laptops that are netbook-friendly too. The Ultra portable laptops that we can call them Ultra-thin laptops too, are some more expensive than netbooks (starts from $700) and provide more processing power and better overall performance than netbooks due to use of the new platform launched by AMD called Yukon; meanwhile they are much less powerful than standard ultra portable laptops that use Intel Core 2 Due processors and much cheaper than them, also.

AMD’s Yukon platform that AMD launched it last night at CES, comprises a new AMD Athlon Neo processor plus either an ATI Radeon HD 3450 discrete GPU (for more pricey models to support performing light 3D games, and HD video) or the X1250 UMA integrated graphics (for better battery life). It is nice to mention that there is no wireless element in this platform (contrary to Intel platforms that always include a wireless component too).

AMD Athlon Neo processor is a more powerful and larger CPU than Atom and less energy-efficient. It means it drains battery more than Atom. So for this reason, AMD is targeting this new group of ultra portable laptops like upcoming 12.1-in HP Pavilion dv2 and 13-3-in HP Pavilion dv3 laptops which are not netbooks. However, although they get ATI integrated or discrete graphics card, they are not as powerful as standard Intel-based ultra portable laptops.

AMD Athlon Neo is a single-core processor features 512MB L2 cache, Direct X 9 graphics, and support for 667MHz DDR2 memory, and comes with a footprint measuring 27 mm by 27 mm and a thermal envelope of 15 watts while Atom CPU comes with a footprint measuring 22-by-22 mm and thermal envelope of 2.5 Watts!

-The 1.6GHz Ahtlon Neo
CPU that has found its way in Pavilion dv2 is 2.5 times faster than 1.6GHz Atom processor but 30 percent slower than a 1.6-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU.

You can see the whole detailed features of Athlon Neo processor in the following picture:

According to AMD, the new platform allows true HD entertainment with 1,080-pixel high-definition playback, and its digital outputs include HDMI and DVI. It said the platform is also suitable for a "robust casual gaming experience".

Please keep in touch that I will surely compare Athlon New processor with Atom in more details.
