Windows 7 operating system has already created a buzz in among the computer users. PC makers are also trying their best to capitalize on the popularity of Windows 7, and thus, launching Windows 7 in their upcoming products. Acer, for example, has decided to launch Windows 7 in its upcoming touch compatible pcs including Acer Aspire Z5610 and 23-inch all-in-one PC.

There are some other products including Aspire Timeline 1820PT netbook, spire 5738PG laptop and a 23-inch high-definition LCD monitor. The list of products boasting of Windows 7 is not finished yet.

arnnet reported:

The vendor also showed off its 3D display notebook capable of ad-hoc conversion of 2D movies and images. It uses a standard 2D to 3D manipulation technology, requiring a pair of complementary 3D glasses to experience the visual effects. While the technology is not groundbreaking, Acer expects the relatively low price tag to drive uptake, with the device priced under $2000.

Windows 7 operating system will be launched on 22 October 2009. So, these touch screen products will also be available in the market soon after the Windows 7 launch. Now, let us see if Windows 7 can gear up sales of Acer products and earn the customer satisfaction.

Can Bing 2.0 Make any Big Impact?

Google is the dominant force in Search Engine market and Microsoft is trying very hard in this regard with its Bing. It is reported that Bing 2.0 version will come very soon and will have some cool features.

PC World reported:
Many employees said in Twitter messages that an update to the company's Bing search engine will come out as early as next week. "Bing 2.0, out this month, has some exciting new features. Imagine seeing maps plus pics from the neighborhood of a restaurant to try," Monte Enbysk, senior editor at Microsoft Office Live, wrote.
Well, I am sure that I wont even bother to look at Bing 2.0 because I have already noticed that Bing is first of all slower than Google and less accurate. Let me show you an example. Nearly 50 minutes, Biplob Kishore Deb uploaded an entry with the title: Besiktas vs Manchester United Preview and Live Score
It got indexed by Google within less than5 minutes and Bing is yet to index it. So, naturally, football fans will have to rely on Google to get better search results. Microsoft has to make Bing faster and must bring more accurate results.
That is why, I am skeptical whether Microsoft can make any difference with Bing 2.0 in the search engine market.
What do you think about it?

Acer Aspire One 531 for business users

| , , , | 0 comments »

Bookmark and Share

Acer Aspire One 531 is a typical netbook with an attractive price tag. The notebook is not for those who look for style. Rather, the business users would like to have their hands on this netbook which provides 6-hour of battery life. You would not find many netbooks with 6 hours back up at £299.00. Battery life is one of the most attractive features of Acer Aspire One 531 netbook.

The netbook normally features Vista operating features, but the users have an option of upgrading it to Windows 7 and it is, of course, for free of cost. It has a very strong keyboard and the users would find it comfortable while typing. However, there is a con of the system too and that is its mousepad.

Acer Aspire One 531 comes with a very small mousepad which is not comfortable at all and those who have big fingers would find it very difficult to work on. Still, the netbook has some very good features which have made it a very good package you can consider.

Asus E-book Reader brings Dual Touchscreen Display

| , , , , | 2 comments »

Bookmark and Share

You perhaps already know that Asus is planning to venture into e-Book reader market with a duel screen e-book reader. The company showed off a prototype of its e-book reader at the CeBIT 2009 Expo in March 2009. Now, Asus is planning to release the product by the end of this year. Currently Sony and Amazon are dominating the e-book reader market and it is pretty much understandable that Asus would also face some tough challenge from Sony’s Reader Pocket Edition and Amazon’s Kindle. However, it is expected that Asus e-book reader would come up with some features which are absent in its competitors. Let us see what features Asus could pack in its dual screen e-book reader:

Screen

Asus E-book reader will come up with a dual touchscreen. Moreover, this would be the first e-book reader which will provide the users with color view. Sony and Amazon e-book readers support only black-and-white view. No doubt, it will be a big advantage of Asus e-book readers, but there is a disadvantage of it too.

As Asus e-book reader will support color display, it can not use high-definition E Ink technology which is widely used in the current e-book readers. E Ink technology does not support color display, but this technology allows the readers to read on the e-book readers in sunlight.

A mini-laptop inside an e-book reader

You can find a netbook inside e-book read. A hinged spine in the centre separates the two touchscreens, and thus, giving an impression of a traditional book. On one side of the spine, you can read book, while the other side of the spine you can use for web browsing and other basic computing. There will be a virtual keyboard in order to make you feel that you are using a netbook.

Other Features

You will find some other attractive features in Asus e-book reader. First of all, the device would come with a microphone and speakers, and thus, allowing its users to make cheap phone calls using VOIP functionality.

Price

Reports out in the media suggest that Asus e-book reader will have an advantage over current e-book readers from Sony and Amazon when it comes to price tag. Asus is planning to launch their e-book reader in two versions: premium and budget. Reports also indicate that the budget version would come with an attractive price tag of about $163 which is much cheaper than Sony Reader Pocket Edition, ranging from $200 to $300, and Kindle from Amazon which is priced at $300. The premium version will cost you a bit more; most probably in the price range of Sony’s and Amazon’s e-book readers, but it will provide you with 3G functionality, and most importantly, you can expand the storage capacity of premium version of Asus e-book.

There is no doubt, if Asus e-book reader can really offer the aforementioned features, it would be a big hit in the e-book reader market and would force its competitors to provide similar features in their upcoming versions.

There are some other electronics companies including MSI, iRex and Plastic Logic who are also planning to step into e-book reader market which has become a lucrative market lately.

whilst the upgrades to the iPod Touch have more to do with performance, as the two top models will become 50 percent faster than the current model and have support for Open GL|ES version 2.0, the cross platform graphics API. This is probably also the reason why Apple in their precentation of the iPod Touch focused so much on the new games that will be made available on iTunes App Store, including EA’s Madden NFL 2010.

The good news is that the Apple lowered the price 8GB iPod Touch to $199. In the U.S. the new the 8 GB Apple iPod Touch will cost $199, the 32 GB $299 and 64GB $399. On the other hand in the U.K the 8GB will cost £149, the 32 GB £229 and 64 GB will cost £299. Want to Use Wi-Fi in your Old-Fashioned Laptop?

| , | 0 comments »

Bookmark and Share

Technology changes very fast and computer technology is no different. There is no guarantee that the device you are using today will be compatible with the technology coming tomorrow. Today while browsing on the net, I came across an article published in Washington Post where the writer answers a technology-related question asked by a reader.

The question was if it would be possible to add Wi-Fi functionality to an old laptop. The writer says it is very much possible to add Wi-Fi to an old-fashioned laptop. However, to do so, the laptop must have a PC card slot which is also known as PCMCIA in aging laptops. Another thing is that you need to know the requirements of the card before you buy the card because the cards available today may not be compatible with your old computer. Most of the modern cards do not have drivers for Windows 95 or 98 operating systems.

The good thing is that you can find cards compatible for Windows 95 or 98 versions in the market and comparatively those cards are cheaper than modern cars. So, you do not need to worry about it, but there is one thing that should make you worry and that is the security of your computer. In order to use old card, you have to go back to old version of router’s security because the old card would not be compatible with the upgraded router security. What you can do here is that you can use Ethernet when you are at home, and then use Wi-Fi in public places.

World's Thinest Laptop is DELL ADAMO XPS

You know that Dell has been trying to build world’s thinnest laptop, and keeping that in mind, Dell unveiled much-rumored Adamo 13 in January in order to prove the rumors true. On Wednesday, Dell unveiled Adamo XPS which is thinner than its predecessor Adamo 13.

Adamo XPS is measured at 9.9 mm or 0.4 inches at the thinning point, while Adamo 13 was 16.39 mm or 0.65 inches thin at the thinnest point. However, the company has not revealed specifications of the laptop. Dell termed the laptop a ‘design concept’, but it is not yet clear if Dell would really produce a product like this. Even if it does, there is no specific date when it is going to release Adamo XPS.

However, it is pretty much understandable that if Dell really decides to produce this laptop for large scale shipping, then Apple MacBook Air, which is currently considered to be world’s thinnest laptop, would face huge challenge.

Top 10 Firefox Browser Plugins

| , , , , , | 1 comments »

Bookmark and Share

There are about a year, I pulled Internet Explorer as my primary browser. Why? Because it crashed on me constantly and took an eternity to both the transition from one site to another. I found the Firefox browser, the user much more friendly, especially considering the number of plugins that have been developed for the browser.

The ability to customize Firefox with extensions such plug-in is what makes this browser open-source so special. However, there are so many options available for plugins, it is difficult to know what's worth installing and it will be a complete waste of your time.

There are lists of Firefox plugins that were created mentioning the best extensions for web developers or for a better YouTube experience. However, I wanted to create a list of all the days of my best choices for the ordinary business owner online.

Out of these, here are my top 10 Firefox extensions:

1. Adblock Plus. If you have ever been annoyed by all those ads and banners on a site that often take longer to download than everything else on the page, install Adblock Plus and get rid of them. Right-click on a banner and choose "Adblock" from the context menu, and the banner won't be downloaded again.

2. Colorful Tabs. This simple add-on makes a strong colorful appeal. It sets each tab to a different color and makes them easy to distinguish while beautifying the overall appearance of the interface. After a long day of research when you have lots of browser windows open, this makes online page viewing easier on the eyes.

3. ColorZilla. ColorZilla puts an eyedropper icon in your status bar. Click it and you'll get a crosshair cursor. As you run this over a Web page, the RGB values of the pixel under the crosshair will display in the status bar, both as three separate values and as a hex value (e.g., R:255, G:255, B:255 | #FFFFFF). I use this all the time if I'm trying to match colors; i.e. a font color to an the primary background on an image, for example.

4. GMail Manager. This Gmail notifier is great if you have multiple Gmail accounts. It allows you to receive new mail notifications along with viewing account details including unread messages, saved drafts, spam messages, labels with new mail, space used, and new mail snippets.

5. MeasureIt. After installing this extension, you'll have a small ruler icon on the left side of your status bar. When you click on it, your browser window will fade out a little, and you'll have a crosshair cursor. Drag the cursor over a section of the screen that you want to measure. Next to the box is its height and width, measured in pixels. I use this all the time when trying to measure the size of images. When you're finished, just hit the Escape key to turn it off and return to normal viewing of the page.

6. Quirk Search Status. Search Status allows you to see how any web site you visit is performing. When you land on a page, SearchStatus lets you view its Google PageRank, Google Category, Alexa popularity ranking, Compete.com ranking, SEOmoz Linkscape mozRank, Alexa incoming links, Alexa related links and backward links from Google, Yahoo! and MSN. This combined search-related information means you can view not only the link importance of a site (according to Google and Linkscape), but also its traffic importance (according to Alexa and Compete), so providing a balanced view of site efficacy. I use this all the time to determine whether a site has enough traffic to warrant accepting a joint venture proposal.

7. Scrapbook. ScrapBook helps you to save Web pages and easily manage your saved collections. Major features are: saving web pages or snippets of a page, saving a web site, organizing the collection in the same way you do bookmarks, full text search and quick filtering search of the collection, and editing of your collected pages.

8. Session Manager. Session Manager helps you manage your Firefox tabs. If you visit the same sites every day, all you need do is open all the sites in separate tabs and/or windows, and then use Session Manager to save the session with a distinct name. Then, you simply go to Tools > Session Manager, pick your session, and all the windows and tabs open up just as you saved them. And, Session Manager tracks your sessions as you surf, and if Firefox (or your system) crashes, you can recover the selection of tabs you had open when it crashed.

9. Tabs Open Relative. Tabs Open Relative makes all new tabs open to the right of the current tab, rather than at the far right of the tab bar. This reduced a huge annoyance I had with how the Firefox browser worked.

10. XMarks. XMarks (formerly Foxmarks) provides seamless bookmark synchronization between your computers and browsers via their synchronization server. Your bookmark (and optionally password) data is securely stored and backed up on their servers and is available online, as well. After you install the add-on, click on the notification to set up Xmarks and start backing up and synchronizing your bookmarks. Install Xmarks on each computer you use, and it seamlessly integrates with your web browser and keeps your bookmarks safely backed up and in sync across all of your computers. Secure Password Sync is an optional Xmarks feature.

Note: To locate these, search for the plug-in extensions here: addons.mozilla.org

If you don't currently use Firefox as your browser, perhaps this list will convince you to give it a try. I have liked my experience so much with Firefox that I won't ever use any other browser.
