Sometimes, I really feel very jealous of Steve Jobs of Apple. And because of his iPhone’s success and popularity, now, all the major computer companies and mobile phone companies are in a desperate bid to emulate his success. All of them are now desperate and they want to make a smart phone that will be considered as the iPhone killer. Off course it has not happened until now but the companies are not ready to give up. Google is coming in the market with G1 phone, a series also thinking of a smart phone and the new company that is going to joint the smart phone brand was on is per head Dell. Dell is mainly famous as a company that produces computer and sever. Dell has some excellent server and personal computer and notebook. However, you have to understand one thing that is the market of computer is not going but the market of mobile phone is now very attractive and the price of a smart phone is not that cheap either. In fact, the price of a smart phone is almost similar to a netbook or a desktop PC. So, everyone wants to enter to this market.
Dell has some significant issue for which it is entering the mobile phone market. I have just said that earlier that the growth in PC market or server market is not taking place that much. Not only that, the price of laptop is falling all the time and you know that now a days, most people are very enthusiastic about netbook. The price of netbook is very cheap. Most of the time less than $500. That is why; the netbook maker can not make a lot of profit. Dell is not strong in this market and the laptop that Dell make are not cheap either. So, Dell decision maker are thinking that this is a very good time to enter to a mobile phone market because the market of a smart phone is relatively new and except Apple’s iPhone and BlackBerry, no one company has been able to get clear success. So, Dell decision makers are perhaps thinking that this is a very good place to enter at this moment.
There are two sides of this decision. First of all, let me tell you that Dell has been trying to minimize the risk by joining both the open source platform and windows mobile platform. Thus, whether you like open source platform based smart phone or you want a windows platform based smart phone, you will have both of them from Dell. This is a smart idea and this will surely attract some more people. Another good thing is that Dell is already established brand in many countries in the world. So, a Dell smart phone will need little introduction. What I am trying to say is that as already people know the name of Dell so, the company will have little trouble in making it smart phone familiar.
I feel that there are some bad sides too. It is true that Dell is a very successful company when it comes to computer, server and laptop. But Dell is yet tested outside of its own area. Some critics might are viewed and already argued that Dell was unsuccessful with its MP3 player. So, there is little prospect of the company becoming successful with its mobile phone. This is something that the decision makers that Dell should look into very carefully.
I feel that Dell has some bright prospect is the mobile phone business. In any case, it is the time of global economic recession and every company now has to try to save its business. It is not very easy and one of the strategies that companies like Dell can take at this moment is ensuring the diversification of product. Mobile phone is still a growing market and most people in the world still do not own a mobile phone. So, it is true that the market will still continue to grow for the next few years. I feel that Dell should take the smart phone idea very seriously and arrange proper advertisement for the smart phone.
